When Julie Uhrman and Roy Bahat approached Mayfield Fund’s Tim Chang about a potential investment in an Android-powered game console, he was skeptical.
The idea was pretty simple: a console that would cost $99 and serve as a platform for game developers building on Android. It would counter a console ecosystem dominated by triple-A consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
That, in of itself, would be hard to do. How would OUYA build up a strong developer community around the device, Chang — a longtime veteran of the game industry who invested in both ngmoco and Playdom, two high-profile gaming acquisitions — asked the duo.
So, they took the idea to Kickstarter. The team sought to raise around $1 million and ended up raising $8.6 million. They got commitments to make games from more than 12,000 developers.
